V.92 - The New Standard in Modem Technology

Worried about missing those calls while you're online? Go ahead and throw away that 2nd phone line. Embarq charges upwards of $30/month for an additional phone line. With our V.92 service there is no need for an additional phone line. All you need is call-waiting on the phone line you are using for Internet and a V.92 modem in your computer. You can then take advantage of one of the most popular features, Modem-on-Hold. This feature will allow you to take incoming calls while you are online and puts your connection on hold with the click of a button. After your call is complete, you can go right back to surfing the Internet, with no need to re-connect.

What is V.92?

V.92 is a new standard for dial-up communications that offers several important improvements over the existing V.90 standard. These improvements are intended to make communications faster, easier and more enjoyable.

What are the major improvements in V.92 technology?

	Quick Connect -- Shortens the time it takes to dial and make a connection by remembering the phone line characteristics.
	Modem-On-Hold -- Many households use the same phone line for both voice calls and data (Internet), so when the user is browsing the Internet, an incoming call cannot get through. MOH allows you to receive an incoming call and stay connected to the Internet (requires call-waiting). Read the MOH FAQ.
	V.44 Compression -- A new data-compression protocol that delivers data rates 10% to 120% faster than those achieved by the existing V.42bis compression protocol.

Do I need any special equipment to use V.92?

Yes, you need a V.92 compliant modem. You'll also need call-waiting service from your phone company to use the Modem-On-Hold feature.
